As Denmark’s largest retailer, COOP interacts with a large network of suppliers and consumers and therefore plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable consumption and production.
COOP therefore works systematically with sustainability within areas such as ethical trade, environment, climate and health.
Sustainable consumption and production
The African Initiative & Savannah Brand is part of COOP’s focus on Ethical Trading.
COOP and the Danish NGO Care have worked together since 2011 to promote and develop responsible supply chains in Africa.
The aim of their partnership is to increase competitiveness for African products and to enhance the livelihoods of the small-scale farmers.
In 2012, COOP launched the brand Savannah which is based on more than 60 different products originating from Africa. Every time you purchase one of the Savannah products, you help to improve the livelihoods of African small-scale farmers and development in Africa.
COOP’s food manifesto
COOP believes that everyone who loves food can make a difference, so in 2014 COOP formulated the food manifesto ‘Together for Better Food’ (Sammen Om Bedre Mad).
The manifest is based on 6 guiding principles that invite members, colleagues and partners to promote the good meal and Danish food culture.
One of the principles listed in the food manifest is that ecology should be affordable to everyone. For most people, price is very often the barrier to purchasing organic products.
Therefore, since January 2015, COOP has reduced the price on organic products and is working on expanding the range of sustainable products that offer the consumers particular ecological value.
